CFCM Belzona 5815 400Belzona has released a new containment grade coating with enhanced flexibility. Belzona 5815 is a solvent-free coating developed as a cost-effective method for stored chemicals.

Concrete is used to build secondary chemical containment areas and bunds to retain spilled chemicals, facilitate product recover and prevent environmental contamination. This concrete is sturdy and cost-effect, but susceptible to physical and chemical damage due to porosity.

To prevent cracking, corrosion, structural integrity and contamination, Belzona notes that asset owners opt for containment areas coated with protective coatings. While the company states that products like its Belzona 4361 provide outstanding chemical resistance and flexibility, it can be costly for secondary containment applications where the stored chemicals are benign.

“Belzona 5815 is an economical solution to secondary containment areas holding nonaggressive chemicals,” noted Osmay Oharriz, Technical Manager at Belzona.

The coating can reportedly resist a range of dilute acids, alkalis, fuels and oils. Oharriz added that “it can bridge cracks in concrete up to an extent” and “has great adhesion to nonmetallic and metallic substrates.”

Belzona reports that testing has shown that the coating has high tensile and flexural strength, resisting pressure up to 2,430 psi after it has been cured at 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees Celcius) for seven days to bridge cracks. Additionally, it can endure temperatures up to 320 degrees Fahrenheit and as low as -40 degrees Fahrenheit.

According to the company, the product Is easy to mix and apply, does not require surface conditioner and can be applied by brush, roller, squeegee or an airless spray system for large containment areas.
