CFCM IGL Coatings Eco Aegis 400Malaysian technology firm IGL Coatings recently announced the launch of its clear graphene reinforced anticorrosion coating.

Ecoclear Aegis is reportedly able to withstand and protect against atmospheric corrosive conditions (C5), with its transparency allowing users to identify early signs of corrosion defects and enact preventative repair measures.

According to IGL, Aegis consists of epoxy resin, silicone resin, silane and graphene in a “one of a kind” system. The combination of these technologies eliminates brittleness, low weathering and chemical resistance.

“The graphene used in Aegis is very different from the Nanoplatelet system used in our automotive coatings. Aegis’s Graphene are rolled into tube forming Graphene Nanotubes,” said Keong Chun Chieh, CEO of IGL Coatings. “Graphene nanotube made it lighter, stronger and more resistant to corrosion. This fully optimized the system’s hydrophobicity and anti-corrosive properties.”

IGL stated that it is one of the only ceramic coatings manufacturers to have its graphene technology verified by a national independent third-party organization. These graphene nanotube act as a barrier, making it harder for water to pass through and prevent oxidation.

The graphene also improves adhesion and formation of electrically conducting network.

“One of the key factors for Aegis was its transparency,” added Keong. “There’s a reason why most anti-corrosion coatings are thick and pigmented. We needed Aegis to be clear – to detect early signs of corrosion and easy to apply.”

Graphene also reportedly allows Aegis to be lighter, stronger and more durable compared to other solutions at only 50 µm a layer. Testing revealed that Aegis is strong under 3,000 hours in a salt spray chamber, or approximately 7.5 years in a marine environment and 15 years in a non-marine environment.

Aegis is free from heavy and toxic metals such as chromium, lead, xylene and isocyanate, in line to its core values, stated IGL. The formula is also sustainable and environmentally friendly.
