Piping is everywhere in process industries, especial in chemical and petroleum production. And the flange faces on the end of almost every pipe segment are a critical connection for pressure containment. Any deterioration of these surfaces could weaken the integrity of that connection, which also creates safety and performance concerns.
Cortec recommends two removable coatings that are easy to install and decreases potential downtime by protecting the flange face areas from corrosion.
VpCI-391 is a water-based temporary coating with low VOC. When applied it leaves a clear non-tacky film that is almost unnoticeable and can be easily removed with alkaline cleaners. VpCI-391 also provides protection in harsh, outdoor, unsheltered environments and has adequate UV resistance.
For more extreme conditions, Cortec offers VpCi-368, a fast-drying solvent-based coating that leaves a waxy finish.
Eric Uutala, technical sales and product manager for Cortec, explains the alternative, “If a raised face is damaged, either from corrosion or mechanical impact, it can cause significant delays in construction in start-up activities. In the case of gramophone raised faces, the re-surfacing process can be very time consuming and could lead to further downtime.”
By using a removable coating, the protective mechanism conforms directly to the surface of the metal, not requiring an additional covering system such as plastic film.
When applying these removable coatings, Uutala says to make sure the flange face is clean and free of rust, dirt, coatings, and any other contaminants. Apply the VpCI-368 or -391 with a brush and allow it to dry for one to two hours before covering with rigid flange cover or other approved mechanical protection.
